More than 650 abandoned vehicles were cleared from Hamala within four days as part of a massive cleanliness drive.

A total of 611 vehicles were removed by their owners following the issue of notices while 42 were cleared by the Northern Municipality after repeated warnings were ignored.

The move is part of the municipality’s efforts to enforce the 2019 National Cleanliness Law.

Northern Municipality director general Lamya Al Fadhala urged people to co-operate with the campaign and adhere to the law in place.

“Preserving the environment and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic is a national and joint responsibility,” she said.

“This campaign follows directives from Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf and ministry’s Under-Secretary for municipalities affairs Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa to intensify monitoring and awareness efforts, especially in locations with high numbers of violations.

“Abandoning cars on streets causes a lot of environmental damage. It also hinders traffic movement.

“Some of these vehicles pose a security threat in the areas in addition to distorting the public image of neighbourhoods.”

She said the municipality will continue removing abandoned scrap vehicles.

Owners will be notified about their vehicles that are left in residential areas, industrial workshops and random locations.

A fine of up to BD300 can be imposed on violators according to the law.
