Eighty Bahrainis studying family medicine have been guaranteed employment in the Health Ministry once they have successfully completed their clinical studies.
Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh told the Shura Council in writing that 40 students each have been accepted for the Clinical Diploma and Master’s in Family Medicine in 2019 and 2020.
She added that the scheme was being conducted in partnership with Tamkeen, the Arabian Gulf University and the Supreme Council for Health.
“This new scheme will help enhance the capabilities and productivity of the selected doctors who would be guaranteed employment by the ministry following their successful completion of studies,” she said in response to questions on employment at the ministry by Shura member Mona Almoayyed.
“In response to another question by Ms Almoayyed – about only 70 Bahraini medical graduates being given employment from 427 assessed and interviewed – the graduates are divided into different training pools without a promise of employment.
“Only those we believe are necessary for our needs get employment immediately without having to wait from among those who apply for training even if it means they are singled out after a lengthier process of test and assessment.
“Our training programmes in general aim to make Bahrainis the best choice amongst employees in the labour market.”
Ms Al Saleh said from 2018 to 2020 the ministry sent 36 doctors to train in rare specialisations.
“We have plans to send 15 doctors for training in rare specialisations this year depending on the circumstances.”
Meanwhile, Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan gave a written response to a question on the labour market observatory project by Shura member and former ministry under-secretary Sabah Al Dossary.
“We launched the project for the labour market observatory in November 2014, but a year later, in October 2015, it was moved to Tamkeen (Labour Fund),” said Mr Humaidan, who is also Labour Market Regulatory Authority board chairman.
“Work is ongoing between the ministry and the Information and eGovernment Authority to launch the ‘Employment Skills Platform’ this year.”
Shura members will be notified about both the responses at the beginning of the extraordinary session on Wednesday.
