Abu Dhabi, May 27, 2006 (WAM) -- The Zakat Fund and the SharjahCharity Foundation signed here today an agreement based on which the Foundation would distribute to eligible beneficiaries an amount of onemillion dirhams disbursed to the Foundation by the Abu Dhabi-based Zakat Fund.

The agreement, which was signed during a visit to the premisesof the Zakat Fund by a delegation from the Sharjah Charity Foundation,marks a landmark beginning of cooperation and coordination between thetwo local charity organisations.

During the visit, the delegation had a first hand informationabout the Zakat Fund's mechanism for collecting Zakat (charity) and the existing joint cooperation between the Zakat Fund and the UAE RedCrescent Society (RCS) through which the RCS delivers zakat monies todeserving beneficiaries inside and outside the UAE.

According to Abdullah bin Aqeeda, Zakat Fund Secretary General,his outfit had been able to collect, during its first and second campaigns,more than AED42 million. He called for closer cooperation between theZakat Fund and other charity organisations in the country.
