Riyadh –  King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and Lenovo have penned a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop the first innovation centre in the MENA region, according to a press release.

The Lenovo Innovation and Creativity Centre will be established in Saudi Arabia to anchor digital transformation and boost cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) as well as high-performance computing (HPC).

Under the deal, the two sides will create the biggest and most sustainable HPC cluster to foster the research, development, and commercialisation of solutions related to several segments. These sectors include genomics, satellite image interpretation, environment, and clean energy.

Meanwhile, Lenovo will leverage the Saudi city’s tech services and products, especially in the Innovation Tower.

KACST and Lenovo signed the agreement on the slides of the LEAP 2023 event, during which Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily) and Ericsson joined forces to launch Mobily Pay in order to bolster mobile financial services across the Kingdom. Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Aramco) and Zoom also announced partnership to endorse the digital transformation ecosystem by developing the tech firm's first global data centre in the Gulf nation.

The global tech conference is being held at Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Centre during 6-9 February 2023 under the title ‘Into New Worlds’

Hakem Al Sagri, Vice President of Digital Transformation at KACST, said: “Our partnership with Lenovo, a global leader, will help us explore opportunities to identify industry-specific solutions that will help the socio-economic development of the country.”

“The collaboration will also allow us to further enhance our digital capabilities and will open doors to establish and develop a technology incubator platform, exchange experiences, and business development methodologies,” Al Sagri continued.

Giovanni Di Filippo, EMEA President at Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group (LISG), indicated: “The growth of digitalisation in the Kingdom is on a rapid scale, and a new era is right around the corner. This requires technology and innovation to play a critical role in setting a new foundation and framework for the future.”

Di Filippo elaborated: “Keeping this in mind, not only will Lenovo play a key role in supporting innovation and development, but in the overall collaborative strategy of advancing digital transformation across the Kingdom supporting the government’s 2030 vision.”

Abdullah Bahanshal was recently named as the new Country Manager for Saudi Arabia at Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG).
