H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohamed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, said that  steel structures for the new Muscat International Airport terminal are all ready and the first shipment of these structures, weighing 6,534 tonnes, has arrived at Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ).

The steel structures are being transferred by truck from PSQ to the project site and the process is expected to be completed in the next four days, the minister said in a statement.

He said that 30,000 tonnes of steel will go into the new terminal. Installation of these structures is expected to begin on September 22, from the north side of the building, which will comprise the departure and arrival lounges, and other facilities.

H E Dr Futaisi added installation of steel structures for the central section of the terminal will be initiated in October.

An additional technical team is expected soon. This team, specialised in the installation of steel structures, will comprise 500 people, who will join the 7,000 people currently on the site. Twenty fixed and mobile cranes are also to be added to the 43 cranes already on the site.

H E Dr Futaisi said that the technical committee is overseeing the project effectively. The panel also follows up on the implementation of design and supply to ensure they conform to agreed standards and specifications to achieve the highest quality standards, apart from overseeing construction work.
