According to managers and experts of Hormuzgan Fisheries Department, Hormuzgan province has the highest potential for shrimp breeding in light of its numerous advantages.
A senior official of Hormuzgan Fisheries Department said there are five shrimp breeding sites in an area of 6,000 hectares across this southern province, including Northern Tiab (1,500 hectares), Southern Tiab (1,200 hectares), Hengam Island (37 hectares), and Bandar Maqam (200 hectares), IRNA reported.
This is while, Bandar Lengeh's Sayeh Khosh site is inactive, Nader Shahrzad added.
Some 800 hectares of land in Bandar Jask have been prepared to be ceded to unemployed people and to promote agriculture, he said.
Fisheries Department has prepared the required infrastructures through digging water supply canals, launching drainage systems, constructing roads, and securing water and electricity, he added.
Also, director general of Hormuzgan Fisheries Department attributed revival of shrimp farming in Hormuzgan to using new cultured shrimp species namely "Vannamei".
Qodrat Mirzadeh said shrimpers can breed and harvest Vanami shrimp twice a year. This will create more income for them, he added.
Since aquatic reserves have declined in free waters and price of fishing devices has increased, revenue of fishers has decreased, he said.
Therefore, Hormuzgan province can be designated as the largest site for breeding cultured shrimp along 900 km coastal area of Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, he said.
Meanwhile, a senior official of Hormuzgan Fisheries Department said that recent ratification of government on support package for shrimp industry has encouraged shrimp breeders.
Ali Karimi estimated that with implementation of the supportive package as of March 21, 2013, shrimp breeders would see all-out support from government and respected organizations.
It will also help to secure cash flow, remove credit restrictions, expand shrimp breeding sites, and create infrastructures such as roads, digging water supply canal and electricity supply for breeding pools, he added.
According to current year budget law, one trillion rials of oil revenues has been allocated to Fisheries Organization, of which 800 billion rials has been earmarked for shrimp industry.
He estimated that shrimp farms would expand to 6,000 hectares by the end of Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2015).
Also, other infrastructures such as the most advanced laboratory for assessing the rate of medicine remaining in aquatics and existence of processing and packing centers can boost exports of cultured shrimp.
