MANAMA - Bahrain’s first Shangri-La Hotel and Resort is scheduled to open by 2022 in the Bahrain Marina mixed-use development, it has emerged.

The announcement follows the signing of an agreement between Bahrain Marina Development Company and the Hong Kong-based multinational hospitality company to manage the hotel.

The hotel will include 250 rooms, 150 one- to three-bedroom suites, eight beach chalets and 21 waterfront villas.

Recreational facilities and meeting facilities at the property will include five restaurants, a rooftop lounge, private beach, two outdoor pools, health club, kids’ club and a ballroom.

Bahrain Marina Development Company chairman Abdulrahman Fakhro said bringing the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts to Bahrain will contribute to the national economy and the development of the tourism sector.

“The Shangri-La name will undoubtedly attract tourists from all across the world, and more importantly provide job opportunities for Bahrainis,” he added.

Bahrain Marina Development Company chief executive Yazan Haddad said during the Gulf Property Show that “the hotel is expected to be a remarkable addition to the facilities lineup to open at Bahrain Marina, which includes various residential, recreational and marine facilities”.

In a statement, Shangri-La International Hotel Management president and chief operating office Oliver Bonke said, “Bahrain is a strategically important destination for Shangri-La Hotels and we are delighted to partner in this opportunity with the Bahrain Marina Development Company.”

“Bringing the iconic Shangri-La Hotel brand to Bahrain in the landmark Bahrain Marina will strengthen the destination as well as further enhance brand recognition in the region,” he added.

The first phase of the Bahrain Marina project, which runs on the eastern coastline of Manama, is expected to be completed by 2020.

The mixed-use development will include a five-star luxury hotel, hotel suites, freehold apartments and waterfront villas, shopping district, fully-integrated family entertainment and educational centre and a recreational waterfront space with food and beverage and retail spaces along with a yacht club capable of berthing a vast number of boats and yachts of different sizes.
