DOHA (Zawya Dow Jones)--Barwa City, a subsidiary of Qatari developer Barwa Real Estate, will invite bids at the end of the month for a $1.5 billion contract to build amenities for the first phase of its 1.4-million-square-meter mega project in Doha, a company executive said Wednesday.

"Six contractors have been prequalified. The opening date [for tenders] for this project is the end of the month," Khalid Al Nasr, general manager of Barwa City, told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Doha, adding that the contract is worth about $1.5 billion.

Qatar Project Management is handling the tender process and has prequalified six contractors made up of two local firms and four international companies. The contract will be awarded in March and work will start immediately thereafter, Al Nasr said.

Phase one of Barwa City is due for completion in 2011, with amenities to include schools, coffee shops and a mosque, he added.

Barwa Real Estate plans to increase its asset value from $40 billion currently to $100 billion over the next 10 years, Al Nasr said.
