The electricity production capacity of power plants will hit 70,000 megawatts (MW) in near future, said the managing director of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution Management Company (Tavanir).

Homayoun Haeri said the threats of sanctions have been turned into opportunities in the power industry, noting a large number of the equipments required by the power industry are produced domestically in cooperation with the universities, ISNA reported.

Iran ranked first in the region in terms of electricity exchange and achieved self-sufficiency in the field of electricity production and transmission, he added.

The official went on to say that electricity distribution companies are the bridges linking the power industry with the people, adding that using the engineering science, managing the data and economy of the industry are among the capabilities of power distribution companies.

An Energy Ministry official Habib Hajizadeh said earlier this month that three new thermal power plants will go on stream by the end of the present government's tenure.

Inauguration of four thermal power plants in the current year (started March 20, 2012) has helped increase power production capacity by 1,900 MW.

Zagros Power Plants in Kermanshah province, Soltanieh Power Plant in Zanjan province, and Semnan and Shahroud power plants in Semnan province are those which were inaugurated in the current year.

Energy Minister Majid Namjou said in January that the country's electricity exports to neighboring countries have increased by about 34 percent since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20, 2012).

He added that by the end of the Fifth Economic Development Plan (2010- 15), Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity by 25 gigawatts to reach 73 gigawatts.
