Some 98 percent of petrochemical industry have so far been privatized, said National Petrochemical Company's (NPC) director for production affairs.
Ali Mohammad Basaqzadeh said once the Persian Gulf Holding, which includes 15 petrochemical firms, is privatized in the next coming months, the figure will reach 98 percent, IRNA reported on Monday.
He said that privatization of petrochemical companies can help improve the capability of the companies.
The official said that unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran have made the petrochemical industry self sufficient, pointing out that producing chemical products and catalysts by domestic experts helps pave the way for the progress of petrochemical industry.
Petchem Exports
The Islamic Republic exported petrochemical products worth more than $14 billion last Iranian year (ended March 19), the director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) said.
Abdolhussein Bayat said on Sunday that the figure pertained to the total value of petrochemical exports throughout the past year, Press TV reported on Monday.
He noted that the production and export of petrochemical products will go up in the current year, which has been named by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as the year of 'National Production, Supporting Iranian Capital and Labor'.
Bayat further noted that the NPC tries to achieve its stated objectives, including a production increase, during the mentioned period.
The senior petrochemical official also said that the completion of development plans, focusing on boosting production and the development of downstream projects are among the NPC's main goals for the current year.
Iran hopes that by encouraging private companies to further engage in the petrochemical market, it can decrease dependence on the export of raw materials such as crude oil and natural gas, and focus more on non-oil exports with higher added values.
Iran's National Petrochemical Company has, in line with the policy, announced that it plans to invest more than $50 billion in supporting the development of private petrochemical projects by 2015.
Earlier, a Fars News Agency report said that petrochemical production capacity and the number of Iranian petrochemical complexes have witnessed eye-catching growth in the last three decades since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Public Relations Department of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) announced that production capacity has increased 19-fold to reach 54.5 million tons compared to the figure for the pre-Islamic Revolution era, the report added.
It added that nominal petrochemical production capacity reached 51 million tons by the end of the Fourth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2005-10) from three million tons at the beginning of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The report said that only six petrochemical facilities, including Shiraz, Abadan, Razi, Kharg, Farabi and Karbon Iran, with a total capacity of 1.6 million tons were active in 1978 but the number of such facilities rose to 39 in the post-Islamic Revolution era, raising the output to 15.8 million tons in 2005 and more than 40 million tons in 2010.
