Dubai: Dubai's Palm Water, a company owned by Dubai World's investment arm Istithmar, in association with the corporate financing arm of Macquarie Bank, has awarded a cornerstone contract to Degremont /Besix Consortium, for the design and construction of an MBR sewage treatment plant of 220,000 cubic metres a day capacity.

The Jumeirah Golf Estates sewerage treatment plant (STP) will be the largest sewage treatment plant using MBR technology. The plant will treat waste generated from 19 Nakheel, DMCC and Istithmar Leisure developments.

Palm Waters reaffirmed its commitment to utilise the safest and most efficient and environmentally friendly systems, a statement said.

The treated sewage effluent will be treated utilising the MBR process to ensure that the strictest of irrigation standards are met and to provide a high quality effluent used to meet the irrigation demands throughout the 19 developments landscaping and golf courses.

The plant will commence treating flows in April 2008 and the first full phase of 55,000 cubic metres a day capacity will be operational by May 2009. The plant will be completed in early 2010.

Plans

In line with their capital works target for 2007 of Dh5 billion, this is the first of three projects due to be let by Palm Water in 2007, the other two being International City STP of 110,000 cubic metres a day capacity and Jafza Utilities Project which comprises of three major facilities - a desalination plant of 100,000 cubic metres a day capacity, a centralised STP with a capacity of 108,000 cubic metres a day, and an industrial wastewater plant with a capacity of 4,000 cubic metres per day.

The corporate financing arm of Macquarie is assisting Palm Water in identifying and advising on a number of financial options to fund the project.
