SANANDAJ - A new steel mill is to be built in this western Iranian province in the next four years if the required finance is supplied, head of the provincial Industries and Mines Organization said Tuesday.
"The province's only steel mill is operating at the meager output of 70,000 tons a year," Hesami added, noting that even a 650,000-ton plant is not economical. "Officials have pledged to finance the building of a 500,000-ton steel mill in the next four years," he stated. He put the latest estimate of Kordestan's iron ore reserves at 54 million tons, adding that foreign contractors have invested some $250 million in the province's mining sector in the past few years. The country's largest ever gold mine, Sari Gunay, has been discovered in Dashkasan, 37 kilometers northeast of the city of Qorveh.
