Sweets and confectionery maker the Nestle Group said yesterday that it will start production of chocolates and wafers at its new facility in Dubai's TechnoPark by the end of this year.

The 1.78 million square foot factory is capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of sweets per year, the firm's regional CEO, Yves Manghardt, said.

"The Middle East is part of the Nestle Group's Asia, Oceania and Africa Zone, and is considered as a region having tremendous growth potential.

We have invested more than $400 million in the Middle East over the years and our new multi-million dollar manufacturing facility in TechnoPark is another testimonial to our deep commitment," he added.

The TechnoPark facility is currently occupied producing powdered milk and in the repacking of Mackintosh's Quality Street chocolates, but Dubai's chocoholics will be happy to know that chocolates will be added to its output by the end of 2010.

In the vast majority of the Middle East, Nestle produces and distributes  locally and the production in Dubai will see the UAE added to that list.
