Telecommunications company Nawras is 'exploring' the possibility of setting up its own data centre in Oman, according to CEO Ross Cormack.
Speaking to Muscat Daily on the sidelines of the recent SAMENA telecommunications conference, Cormack said Nawras was currently in discussions with Qtel sister company NavLink about developing the centre.
He said, "We have a sister company called NavLink that we are in discussions with. They have data centres around the region, including Qatar, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
"It is early days and we do not have a specific plan, but we are exploring ways of doing this in Oman."
Data centres provide hosting and back-up services to large corporate
customers and government departments, such as oil and gas and banking companies.
Cormack added that Qtel and NavLink built a joint venture data centre in Qatar in 2006, which now serves a variety of government companies and 'major corporate customers.'
He said, "We were the first subsidiary of the Qtel group, and now Qtel itself has operations across 18 countries.
"The group has 18 operators and this is one of those operators.
"It provides managed services, including the provision of data centres and has a significant customer base in the region, so we are looking to leverage their skills."
The announcement comes after Omantel unveiled plans last year to set up a data centre subsidiary called Oman Data Park, in a joint venture with 4Trust.
