ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Investment Company said one of its entities, MDC Power Holding Company, has signed a joint development agreement with The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) to co-develop seawater reverse osmosis desalination plants in the Northern Emirates.

The Fewa was established to cater the needs of the Northern Emirates population by providing world-class electricity and water services, improve the standards of living and achieve sustainable growth by 2021.

The move is aimed at the growing water demand in the UAE through utilizing an efficient water generation system, it stated.

Commenting on the agreement, Mohammad Mohammad Saleh, the director general of Fewa, said: "The mandate is to develop desalination plants in the northern emirates of Ras Al Khaimah, Um Al Quwain, and Fujairah with a total capacity of 135 million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD), which will be developed in two phases."

"The timing and sizing of the facilities have been determined based on the optimal technical solution and commercial attractiveness. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by 2021," stated Saleh.

Mohammed Al Huraimel, the utlilites director, Mubadala said this collaboration will leverage each entity’s unique capabilities.

"Together, with Fewa, our goal is to continue working on improving the overall power and water sector towards a highly efficient generation system while reducing the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), associated with the water desalination process in alignment with the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036," he added.
