AMMAN - Monitoring devices will be installed on 235 vehicles belonging to the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) to control their movements and cut down on fuel consumption, officials said on Thursday.

Under an agreement signed yesterday between WAJ and JO Secure, a company affiliated with the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau, the devices will be installed at a total cost of JD100,000.

"Installing the devices is part of plans to raise the efficiency and level of consumer services provided by WAJ. Such a system will curb irregularities and ensure quicker responses to water complaints by our teams," WAJ Secretary General Munir Oweis said during the signing ceremony yesterday.

He underscored that the system will be applied in later stages in all water departments across the Kingdom, in addition to water company affiliates, such as the Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna), the Aqaba Water Company and the northern governorates water firm.

Oweis added that the monitoring devices will also be installed on the WAJ's heavy machinery, which is usually rented by contractors implementing projects for the authority.

"Under the new system, maintenance and response to complaints will be carried out with high efficiency, while ensuring that our vehicles are only used for work purposes," he said.

Meanwhile, JO Secure Director Major General (Ret.) Nouran Maaytah said the monitoring systems will be connected to a central server at WAJ that can track all its vehicles.

"This will help reduce fuel consumption by 30 per cent in addition to saving time and effort as the devices will provide the driver with a map of all of the country's streets and highlight the shortest route to a certain destination," he noted.
