New York - Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaee said Friday Iran expected US to seriously counter those behind the latest anti-Islam movie which is against humanity and rationalism.

Condemning the new case of sacrilege of Islam, the ambassador said if western states, US in particular, had shown a serious response to those who had previously insulted Islam, we would not have been witnessing new cases of sacrilege of Islam.

The recent anti-Islam movie was produced in line with the West's policies to spread Islamophobia worldwide, Khazaee said in an address at the UN Headquarters.

He added that insulting Islam and West's Islamophobia plan had started when the blasphemous British author Salman Rushdie wrote a book against the holly Prophet of Islam (PBUH) in 1988.

The trend was continued in other western countries by insulting Muslims' holy book, the Quran, as well as their Islamic sanctities.

The ambassador stressed that making the latest anti-Islam film (The Innocent Muslims) was also against international conventions and the Charter of the United Nations which condemned any kind of sacrilege of the divine faiths, religious figures, messengers of the divine religions and their holy books.

Such moves would finally lead to conflicts among different religions, nations and cultures which by no means would serve the interests of mankind, Khazaee stressed.

Referring to Iran's current presidency over the Non-Aligned Movement, he said members of the movement have considered the anti-Islam movie as a forbidden act which can be followed up in the courts of law.

The anti-Islam movie triggered an increasing wave of protests among Muslims worldwide fuelling anti-US sentiments throughout the Islamic World including Iran, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Kuwait, Nigeria and Morocco.

According to some US media reports, producer of the film was a Zionist.
