Nigeria is committed to achieving 30 gigawatts (GW) of energy by 2030, with 30% to be generated from renewables, The Vanguard newspaper reported, citing President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy has set the vision 30:30:30, which aims at achieving 30GW of electricity by 2030 with renewable energy contributing 30% of the energy mix,” the president said during the US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, US.
He said Nigeria became the first African country to develop a detailed energy transition plan last year to tackle energy shortage and climate change by becoming net-zero by 2060.
The country plans to eliminate the use of petrol and diesel generators by 2060, so it needs to deploy renewables, particularly solar, at an unprecedented scale, the president noted.
“The energy transition plan requires that 5.3GW of solar be deployed annually until 2060 to achieve our targets,” Buhari said.
