MUSCAT -- The race for a contract to execute the passenger terminal package of the Duqm Airport project is now down to three major competitors.

Bids for the so-called Package 3 of the airport project were opened at the Tender Board here yesterday with firm offers received from only three parties: Larsen & Toubro (Oman), the joint venture of Galfar and Daewoo Engineering, and Consolidated Contractors Co. Two other firms - Hanjin Heavy Industries and Makyol - opted out of contention.

As part of the Phase 3 package, the selected contractor will build a passenger terminal with a capacity to handle 500,000 passengers annually, an air cargo facility of 50,000 tonnes capacity, a 36-metre high Air Traffic Control Tower, and in-flight catering facilities. Completion is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2013.
Serving as a regional gateway, Duqm Airport will catalyse economic, industrial and commercial growth in the Wusta region. The new airport forms a key component of a multi-modal transportation hub envisioned at Duqm.

Korean construction firm Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction is preparing to commence work on the Airside Infrastructure contract, representing Package 2 of the Duqm Airport project.

Valued at RO 44 million, it entails the construction of, among other things, a 4-kilometre-long runway designed and built to Code-F standards, two taxiways, and parking apron for passenger aircraft.
