Check your Sharjah route: New constructions to begin

A Dh103-million infrastructure project in Sharjah is set to convert two major squares and a roundabout into intersections with traffic signals, the emirate's Road and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced.

To be completed by the first quarter of 2021, the new intersections will be replacing the Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi and the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi Squares. Detours and alternative roads have been prepared for the construction period, authorities said. Motorists are advised to plan their trips and check their routes before heading out.

Yousef Saleh Al Suwaiji, chairman of the SRTA, said the mega project is part of the authority's emirate-wide development project to create better intersections that would improve traffic movement.

Solving traffic jams

Fatima Al Ketbi, director of the road projects department at the SRTA, said the Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Square is one of the most important axes linking internal roads in the city.

It serves four residential areas - Al Azra, Al Ghafia, Al Falaj and Al Jazzat - as well as a school district and other major exit points. Heavy traffic is usually observed at these locations during peak hours.

The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi Square is just as busy, said Al Ketbi. It links the areas of Al Nakhilat, Al Mirqab, Al Qadisiyah and Sharqan.

Construction works will include the development of the Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Road, transforming it from a single road in each direction into a two-way road with two lanes in each direction.

Pedestrian lanes, directional signs, and all other road components are part of the project.
