MUSCAT: The captain of the freed Korean cargo ship Samho Jewelry who was recovering in a Salalah Hospital will be shifted to Seoul today.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Jonghyun Choe, ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Sultanate of Oman said, "he will be shifted from Salalah to Seoul for further treatment."

According to Korean Times, the 58-year-old captain of the Samho Jewelry chemical carrier was hijacked in the Arabian Sea on January 15.

On January 21, the South Korean navy commandos stormed the cargo ship which had been seized by pirates.

Samho Jewelry
The 11,500-tonne Samho Jewelry had been carrying chemicals from the United Arab Emirates towards Sri Lanka when it was hijacked in the waters between Oman and India.

Seok Hae-kyun, the captain of Samho Jewelry, was shot several times by pirates when South Korean naval commandos successfully carried out a rescue operation.

Today in Muscat
Meanwhile, the South Korean cargo ship and its 21-member crew that was freed from the Somalian pirates by South Korean Navy commandos is expected to arrive at the Sultan Qaboos Port Muscat today if the necessary permission comes through. "It has not arrived. Hopefully if we get the clearance it will arrive tomorrow," the Korean ambassador added.

The freed freighter will enter Oman under escort of the South Korean destroyer Choi Young.

The freighter has a crew of eight South Koreans, two Indonesians and 11 Myanmarese.

Captured pirates
The five captured pirates are said to have been detained in an isolated room of the Korean destroyer, which is escorting the freed Samho Jewelry.

Commenting on the issue of the shifting the pirates to Korea, Jonghyun Choe said, "my government certainly wants them to be shifted. But the technicalities of getting the captured pirates transferred from the ship to Seoul have to be worked out."

Meanwhile reports from the Korean newspaper said, that the captain of Samho Jewelry, who suffered gunshot wounds on his stomach from a pirate's bullet who is being shifted today was also treated by a South Korean medical team dispatched to the hospital in Salalah.

Korean Times reported that upon arrival in Seoul the captain of Samho Jewelry will be sent to Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, for intensive treatment.
