DOHA: The Barwa Village in Wakra is expected to be open for business in three months. The first few retailers signed tenancy agreements with the Barwa Village Company, a subsidiary of Barwa Real Estate Company yesterday.

The sprawling Barwa Village located on the Doha-Wakra road has 918 shops and 458 residential units, along with various other state-of-the-art facilities. Signing of tenancy agreements for the housing units will start very soon, probably in two weeks, Khaled Al Hitmi, general manager of Barwa Village Company said.

About 70 percent of the shops have already been allotted and about 300 of the retailers are those relocating from the Musherib-Share-e-Kahraba area, where the ambitious Musherib project is coming up, said Al Hitmi.

Residents from this locality had been given priority while allotting spaces at the Barwa Village. "The project has been completed on schedule. During a press conference held in 2008, Barwa Chairman Ghanim Al Saad had said that the Barwa Village would be ready by the first quarter of 2010," said Al Hitmi, speaking to the media at the Village premises yesterday.

He said there was an overwhelming demand for the housing units, with about 700 applicants put in the waiting list. About 7 percent of the applicants were nationals.

"The buildings are ready for occupation. Retailers will be given three months time to complete their interior design and decoration works. They can open their shops anytime from now, as they wish," said Al Hitmi.

"We don't expect a problem in attracting customers to the Barwa Village, thanks to its location close to several residential and commercial districts and the high quality of our facilities and services," he added. Ibrahim Zainal, Leasing Manager at Waseef, another subsidiary of Barwa said, the shops and houses at the Village would be occupied in a phased manner.
