The prices of most fruit and vegetables have fallen by up to 60 per cent following sharp hikes witnessed over the past few months.

Vegetable traders said yesterday that the price of staple vegetables has decreased dramatically, with parsley being sold at between 300 fils and 150 fils and the cost of a kilo of tomatoes falling to 500 fils.

This was revealed yesterday during a visit by Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr.

Hassan Fakhro to the Muharraq Central Market. During the visit, traders and suppliers praised the ministry's efforts to facilitate import procedures and affirmed that prices are coming down following a period of increase.

Traders also confirmed that they are fully prepared for increased demand over Eid Al Adha and will have a surplus of supplies to ensure that there are no shortages.

The minister also spoke to several butchers and representatives of the Bahrain Livestock Company who assured him that all preparations are being taken to ensure an abundance of meat for the sacrificial rituals of Eid Al Adha.

According to the company representatives, a shipment of 10,000 cattle arrived this morning and another shipment of 25,000 cattle is due on October 30.

Minister Dr. Hassan confirmed that the ministry continuously follows up on the market prices of goods and monitors the sales and purchasing of vegetables and meat in order to protect consumers from unnecessary price hikes.
