Astara trade port in northern Gilan province is to become operational with a capacity of 600,000 tons and via an investment to the tune of 300 billion rials ($30 million) by the private sector, announced the manager of the port.

This will help shift the direction of the commodities, which are transferred from Octav Port in Kazakhstan and Turkmenbashi Port in Turkmenistan to Georgia and the ports of Black Sea, to Astara port, Fardin Pourazad said, Mehr News Agency wrote.

It will also create a great change in economic and trade fields of the region, he added. "Inauguration of Qazvin-Astara railroad will accelerate implementation of the project and decrease transportation costs."

Pourazad continued saying that Kazakhstan is a top grain exporter worldwide with an annual production of 18 million tons.

The grain produced by Kazakhstan and Russia is transported via Black Sea, he said. "After a long and difficult journey, it reaches African nations. This increases the final price of grains by 50 percent."

He added that if the grains are transferred via Astara port, the final price will become more affordable for consumers."In addition, the North-South Corridor will become active."

"However, this is tied to constructing new storehouses and silos in Astara Port," he said.

The final capacity of Astara port has been estimated to be 3.5 million tons.

About 1.5 million tons of the capacity pertains to loading and unloading fuels and oil products, while the remaining 2 million tons is linked to loading and unloading other goods, Pourazad said.
