The humble Aspirin, used to treat mild-to-moderate pain and fever, has seen its price going up by 30-150 per cent in the UAE.

In the past few months, the price of a 100mg, 20-tablet leaflet of imported Aspirin by Bayer has risen to Dh13 from about Dh10.

"We are selling it for Dh13 but before March it was about Dh10," said a salesperson at the pharmacy at New Medical Centre in Al Ghusais. The pharmacy at Welcare Hospital in Al Gharoud area of Dubai also quoted Dh13 as the current selling price, up from Dh10.

The price of locally-produced Jusprin, 81mg for a 40-tablet pack, was Dh4 some time back but is now priced at Dh10. The pharmacy at Welcare Hospital quoted the same price.

However, there are some pharmacies in Dubai, which are still selling at the old price. For example, Life Pharmacy at Grand City Mall, Al Quoz, is selling Jusprin at the old price.

The Ministry of Health did not respond when contacted by this paper.
