Abu Dhabi, May 4th, 2010, (WAM) -- The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) closely monitors the administration of 91 schools taking their Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) exam.

ADEC representatives visited schools before and during the exam to ensure that all of the international rules and regulations set for this assessment are met. The administered schools were from all different models throughout Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Gharbia.

The PISA exam is an international standardized assessment administered to 15 year old students. The exam focuses on reading skills for Arabic & English languages, mathematics and science. PISA was jointly developed by partners of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

This year saw 65 countries, including the United Arab Emirates taking part in this assessment.

PISA focuses on this particular age group as they are reaching the end of their education and should have most of their knowledge and skills developed allowing them to socially and economically integrate into their society. As Abu Dhabi moves forward towards materializing its social and economic visions, ADEC must ensure that students have developed the proper skill sets needed to succeed in a global economy.

"Education is built on a universal foundation but it is dynamic and changes as business, the economy, technology and society change which means we need to constantly keep up to date with changing approaches," said Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General at ADEC. "Assessing our students through internationally recognized exams helps us develop our system to ensure that not only we are meeting global expectations but also exceeding expectations," he added.

The private British and American curriculum schools were tested on April 18th-22nd and the Ministry of Education (MoE) curriculum schools both public and private took their exams on April 24th whilst the Asian curriculum schools will take their tests on May 16th - 20th.
