Abu Dhabi’s satellite company Yahsat has selected Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s to launch its next generation Thuraya communications satellite in the second half of 2023.
SpaceX’s Falcon 9 was selected primarily due to its high reliability and advanced capabilities, the Abu Dhabi stock exchange listed company said in a statement.
The statement didn’t disclose the terms of the contract.
Yahsat, a subsidiary of state investor Mubadala, is one of the largest providers of satellite communications services in the world. It also owns satellite company Thuraya.
Thuraya 4-NGS is expected to support Yahsat’s growth across new and existing product lines, while increasing capacity and coverage across Europe, Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East. Operations are scheduled to commence in 2024.
