Abu Dhabi: Plans to optimise traffic flow, especially during accidents, are under way as the Department of Transport (DoT) gears up towards furthering the integration of technology within its services.
Speaking at the sixth annual Abu Dhabi e-government Forum, the DoT revealed that several projects are under way, including one that distributes traffic in areas of congestion using traffic lights and Virtual Messaging Signs (VMS).
“This technique will utilise real-time information that will be collected using CCTV cameras and sensors in order to detect any problems in traffic flow. Then, our control room will be able to redistribute vehicles so that congestion is avoided,” Ahmad Al Hammadi, acting section head of the strategic planning department at the DoT, said.
The department has also said that a system that allows motorists to detect empty parking spots in locations across the capital is to be implemented over the coming period.
“This means that people will be more capable of planning their trips to places, especially in locations that are known to be busy, such as downtown Abu Dhabi. The application through which the service will be available will inform users of empty parking spots, making the process more efficient in general,” he added.
