Dubai The Humanitarian Aid section at the Department of Punitive and Reformative Establishments helped release 30 prisoners last year by paying their financial obligations, which amounted to Dh604,502.
The section helped seven inmates in 2010 with Dh111,769 and 34 in 2009 with Dh322,231. Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Dubai Police Chief, was briefed on the aid during an inspection visit to the department yesterday. Last year, 1,014 prisoners were pardoned, compared with 973 in 2010 and 1,053 in 2009.
At the Education and Training section 93 inmates took computer courses in 2011, while 28 pursued their education, and 2,860 visited the library and borrowed 13,440 books, Major Gen Al Mazeina was told.
He toured the various sections of Dubai Jail accompanied by senior officers, starting with the customer service section.
Major Gen Al Mazeina also viewed the handmade accessories and decorative items produced by the inmates at the handicrafts section.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the efforts of the Religious Programmes section.
