Sogra Consulting Company reported that in the first half of 2009, Iran produced 4.3 million tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) and confirmed its status as the world's second biggest DRI producer after India.
In 2008 Iran produced 7.5 million tons of DRI. It produces 13 percent of global DRI production and 41 percent of total Middle East DRI production, which reached 18.2 million tons in 2008, Steelguru.com wrote.
Iran holds 18 percent of the global deposits of natural gas. This means that the use of natural gas in Iran's steel industry, particularly in DRI production, has increased. All plants in Iran, except Isfahan Steel Company, use this technology.
The new plant of Khuzestan Steel Company with a capacity of 80,000 tons, which became operational in 2008, made the main contribution to DRI output growth in Iran.
