The first phase of the project of constructing a free way from Tehran to the north of the country (Tehran-Shomal freeway) has progressed by 46 percent.

Announcing this, Abbasali Ab Bar, the managing director of Tehran-Shomal Free Way Company, said the first phase of the project was slated to come on stream by April 20, 2012.

He put the length of the first section of the free way at 32 kilometers.

He said the longest tunnel of the first section is Taloon tunnel with a length of 5 kilometers.

"Of course, the length of Alborz tunnel in the second section of the highway is about 6.4 kilometers," he said.

He added 29 tunnels with a length of 28.5 kilometers will be dug in the first section of the freeway, of which 25 kilometers have been dug.

Ab Bar said the construction of the first section's bridges and tunnels have progressed by 8 percent and 89 percent, respectively.

He said the contractor of the project is a Chinese company which has guaranteed to implement the first phase of the project in 5 years.

Some $138 million and 1.69 trillion rials were spent on the first phase of the project, he noted, saying, "To complete the project we need $250 million."

The Tehran-Shomal freeway will have a length of 121 kilometers and is targeted to establish a rapid and safe connection between the central area of Iran, particularly Tehran, with the south Caspian coast and the recently-established countries beyond the Iranian coasts of this sea.
