The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently announced the design and build contract for the first 9.5km phase of Al Sufouh Tramway has been awarded to a consortium comprising Alstom and Besix.Abdul Majid Al Khaja, CEO of RTA Rail Agency stated the Dh3,888 million project calls for the design and construction of 13 stations and a depot and will have multimodal interchange stations with the Red Line. These include Mall of the Emirates, Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers.
The first phase is scheduled to be completed and commence operations by April 11, 2011.

The front design of the tram is inspired by the shape of a diamond and each tram measures 44 metres in length and has a capacity to accommodate 305 passengers. It will not require overhead electrical cables as electricity will be supplied through a safe ground cable system. Each tram will cater for bicycle space while the stations will have provisions for bicycle parking."
"Al Safouh Tramway will be the world's first tram network to use platform screen doors fully aligned with the trains' doors opening and closing mechanism. It is also the world's first tram project with fully enclosed air-conditioned stations."
