The State Cabinet yesterday approved a draft decision of the Ministry of Interior regulating taxi services in the country.

The draft decision aims to protect the rights of passengers and curtail cheating and malpractices by drivers.

Taxi drivers are allowed to collect from the passengers only the amount recorded in the meter, whether it has one passenger or a group of passengers. This means they cannot charge each passenger in the group separately.

The taxis are not allowed to take more than one passenger in a trip, if they are not part of the same group, even if their destination is similar. The draft decision states that its provisions should be applicable to all taxis operated by public transport company, Mowasalat.

Taxis should have turquoise colour on their body and gray, blue, maroon or yellow on the roof depending on the circumstances.

Other people are prohibited from painting their cars with the same colours of the taxis as defined by the decision.

Currently, Karwa taxis directly run by Mowasalat are differentiated from those run by its franchisees with a change in the colour of the roof, that is painted in the above-mentioned colours.

The cabinet’s regular weekly meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister and Interior Minister, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani also approved the validity of the provisions of Law No. (24) of 2002 on retirement and pensions on Qatari employees in the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.

The Cabinet took the necessary measures to ratify the memorandum of understanding on the exchange of experiences and cooperation in legal and judicial affairs between Qatar’s Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Justice and the Law of the Republic of Colombia.

The Cabinet reviewed a letter by the Minister of Justice on the proposed amendment of the laws regulating judicial or quasi-judicial committees and two letters of Qatar's Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations on the annual report on the implementation of the State of Qatar's plan for the Alliance of Civilizations.

Established within the Foreign Ministry, Qatar's Committee for Alliance of Civilizations oversees the development of Qatar's action plan for the alliance of civilizations and follows up on its contributions in this regard.
