Iran produced 167,000 tons of glass in the first two months of the current Iranian year (started March 21).

This figure indicates a 3.7-percent growth compared with the corresponding figure of last year, which was 161,000 tons.

In this period, production of glassware, sanitary products and Chinaware amounted to 70,600 tons, 12,700 tons and 6,700 tons, respectively.

During April 21-May 21, glass production reached 89,000 tons.

In the same period, production of glassware, sanitary products and Chinaware amounted to 36,600 tons, 6,300 tons and 3,500 tons, respectively.

In April, a report released by IRNA said 1.01 million tons of glass were produced last year.

It added that 60 percent of the total Silica requirements are provided by Qazvin province, which has 11 silica mines.

The province has the capacity to produce 950,000 tons of silica annually, while the total figure for the country is 2 million tons.

The report said 431,000 tons of glassware, 89,500 tons of sanitary products and 46,400 tons of chinaware were produced in the country last year.

In order to increase glass production capacity, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched Ardekan Glass Factory in Yazd province in February.

The plant, the third largest in the world after the US and China for this product, is capable of producing pure glass with a diameter of 19 millimeters.
