The Tower will be a "notch higher" than the 828 metre Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower

Dubai-based developer Emaar Properties will on Monday break ground on its $1 billion ‘The Tower’ which, when complete, will be the world’s new tallest tower, overtaking the emirate’s iconic Burj Khalifa.

“Ground breaking of ‘The Tower’ at Dubai Creek Harbour by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, will start at 5 pm (Dubai time) sharp,” Emaar said in a statement ahead of the ceremony.

The project was first introduced in April and is planned to be a "notch higher" than the 828 metre Burj Khalifa, currently the world's tallest tower. Emaar Properties Chairman Mohamed Alabbar said then that the new tower would be completed at the beginning of 2020.

The launch date is timed to coincide with the World Expo in Dubai. The Tower serves as the core of the Dubai Creek Harbour, a 6 square kilometer (sq km) master-planned waterfront development.

The masterplan includes residential, retail, and commercial space, and features 22 hotels with 4,400 rooms, according to a report by Zawya Projects
