JEDDAH: The Ministry of Labor and Social Development has referred three major Madinah-based companies to the Preliminary Commission for Settlement of Labor Disputes over their failure to pay the salaries of their workers.

Nearly 6,000 Saudi and expat workers of these companies have not received salaries for the last three to six months, reports said on Monday.

The move came after the bodies concerned took necessary measures, including enforcing relevant labor laws and suspending some e-services, against these companies.

A large number of workers of these companies had filed formal complaints with the ministry's office in Madinah.

The firms were referred to the commission after they expressed their inability to clear the dues.

One of the financially ailing companies hired around 2,400 employees, while 3,600 have been employed with the other two companies.

The commission has already started taking action by suspending the progress billings of one of these companies in coordination with the relevant authorities in the Madinah Province.

The commission is expected to consider this week new complaints referred by the ministry against other major construction companies. It is expected to issue decisive rulings within a few months to solve the problem.

As an instant measure, the report said, the non-Saudi workers will be given the choice of either moving to another company or leaving the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Awwad Al-Hazemi, director general of the ministry's Madinah branch, said the office is paying full attention to the issue.
