In a continuous upward trend for four months, the inflation rate stabilised at 4.8% in June 2017, according to data posted by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on its website.  

This stabilisation is due to the maintainance of the prices increase pace between April and June of this year and the same period last year (+0.4%).

According to the INS, this inflation rate is mainly due to the 3.9% increase in the prices of the food and beverage group caused by the rise in the prices of edible oils 17.3%, fish 6.3%, fruits 4.6% and milk, cheese and eggs 2.8% and meat 2.1%.

Same for the prices of beverages which climbed up by 4.4% as a result of the 6% rise in the mineral water, soft drinks and fruit juices prices.  Prices of the clothing and footwear group also edged up by 9.3% at an annual rate due to the 9.8% increase in footwear prices, 9.6% in clothing items and 3.1% in textile.

The group housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels also registered a rise of 4.8% on a year-on-year basis, due to increase in rents by 5.7%, the SONEDE prices by 1.8% and electricity and gas by 2.8%.According to the INS, the prices of the group furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance were also up by 4.4%, restaurant and hotel services (+6.5%), transport group (6.1%) and the communication group (1.1%).

Besides, the INS pointed out that the underlying inflation rate (without food, beverages and energy) reached 5.5%.Prices of unmanaged products increased by 5.8% over the year, particularly  free food products (+4.6%) against 0.5% for regulated products.

Consumer price index up by 0.4% compared to May 2017

The consumer price index edged up by 0.4% in June 2017 compared to May 2017 due to the 1% increase in the prices of clothing and footwear items as a result of the Eid el-Fitr feast celebration.Prices of clothing and footwear items were up by 1.6% and 1.8%, respectively.

The housing group prices climbed by 0.5% due to the 0.6% increase in rents and 1.2% in maintainance and house repairs' expenses. Prices in the restaurants and hotels group also rose by 0.6% mainly due to the 1% increase in prices of accommodation services. The food and beverages group’s price index also edged up by 0.3% compared to the previous month.
