Arabtec Holding has announced that its construction arm has won a 363 million UAE dirham ($98.8 milion) contract to build a new mall at Dubai South.

The mall will be built at the Emaar South project, which is a joint venture between Emaar Properties and the Dubai World Trade Centre. The joint venture, which was announced at Cityscape 2016 in September, is set to build more than 15,000 homes around a golf course on a 7 square kilometre portion of the Dubai South site that will contain the new mall, hotels, community parks, schools and other facilities.

Arabtec said that the mall will have 83,000 square metres of built-up area over three levels. The ground level will contain parking and a hypermarket. The first and second floors will house retail, food and beverage units, a cinema, a family entertainment centre and a food court. Work is set to start on site this month.

Dubai South is a 145 square kilometre site that not only houses Emaar South but also the Al Maktoum International Airport, the Expo 2020 site, a logistics district and a residential district containing up to 10,000 new homes. A report published yesterday by ReidIn/Global Capital Partners stated that 6,000 new homes have already been launched at the site, but that a further 28,000 are in the planning phase.

Hamish Tyrwhitt, chief executive of Arabtec Holding, said that it looked forward "to delivering another project at the Expo 2020 site".  The company announced last month that it would build the Santiago Calatrava-designed UAE pavilion at the Expo site.

"Our recent project wins demonstrate the trust we are developing with our clients to deliver projects," he said.
