Acciona said on Monday that its Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Umm Al Houl in Qatar has successfully reached full capacity and has completed final tests ahead of schedule.

The Spanish contractor is responsible for the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the UHP Expansion.

Part of a bigger Independent Water and Power project (IWPP) that includes an existing SWRO facility, the 282,000 cubic metres per day (m3/day) Umm Al Houl Expansion (UHP Expansion) will increase the IWPP desalination capacity to 564,000 m3/day, making it the biggest SWRO desalination plant in Qatar,  Acciona said in a press statement

The project, which is Acciona's third RO desalination plant in Qatar, was completed in 22 months.

José Francisco García Jorge, UHP Expansion Project Director, said: “This milestone is the result of good teamwork between the client, our engineers and the construction teams in challenging conditions because of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are very proud to have completed this project that will deliver safe drinking water in a sustainable and innovative way.”

In March, Zawya Projects had reported that Acciona is also deploying its Maestro Artificial Intelligence platform would lower the Umm Al Houl plant's energy and reagent consumption, which in turn will reduce the plant's CO2 emissions by 12,000 tonnes per year.
