The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has issued a decision which mandates all taxis to have meters.

According to Article 42, Chapter 9 of the decision (No 2/2018) on new regulations of the Land Transport Law, ‘all taxis should have meters, tracking system and a light panel at the top. And they should all be approved by the ministry’.

The decision further states that all taxis should be equipped with a tracking, navigation and communication system.

For better monitoring and feedback, driver and car details on a panel should be placed behind the driver’s seat and another one at a visible place in the front. The ministry will determine the fares after studying the supply and demand, operational costs, including the fuel price.

According to the rule, a taxi operator should be an Omani, with a driving licence valid for three years. He must not be less than 21 years old and not more than 60 years. Special permission could be granted for drivers above 60 years, provided a medical report from a accredited health institution is submitted.

The life of taxis operated by the companies should not exceed seven years and ten years for individuals. The regulation also lays down penalties which includes a fine of RO50 for failure to run the meter and RO200 for driving without a meter.

An official at the ministry told Muscat Daily that more details of the new regulations will be revealed at a press conference next month.
