More than 11,000 motorists were caught speeding in Abu Dhabi in just three months, the Abu Dhabi Police revealed on Monday.

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police, said 11,434 vehicles breached speed limits in three months, while 2,375 motorists were caught crossing the red signal.

The police warned that drivers who cross the red signal will receive a fine of Dh1000, 12 black points and 30-day vehicle confiscation.

Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaili, director of the directorate, said speed cameras have been put in strategic locations, particularly at intersections, to monitor speed violations.

He stressed that speeding poses serious dangers to motorists, adding that the severity of the collision coming from intersections, as well as running over pedestrians crossing at intersections, can result in serious injuries or loss of lives.

He pointed out that speed cameras at intersections are monitoring and photographing speed violations as well as those who are crossing the red signal.

Brigadier Al Khaili stressed that the main reason as to why drivers increase their speed limit at intersections, is when they know the red light is approaching, adding that not being patient for a few minutes for the light to turn green, can result in tragic outcomes.
