KUWAIT CITY: The Ministry of Commerce has issued 11 administrative decisions to ban the import of beef, goats, sheep and birds from several countries due to the emergence of anthrax, foot-and-mouth disease and avian flu, while five decisions have been issued to lift the ban on birds and cows from other countries, reports Al-Rai daily.

The ministry Undersecretary Dr Khalid Al-Fadil has also issued a ban on the import of beef, sheep, goats and their products (fresh, frozen) from the Russian Federation due to foot-and-mouth disease, and from Kazakhstan due to anthrax.

In the same context, all varieties of melons from Australia are also banned because of the outbreak of ‘listeria’.

The ministry has banned the import of live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from Pakistan, Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Denmark and the United Kingdom due to swine flu.

Recent decisions have lifted the ban on poultry meat from the following countries: Montenegro, Lithuania, Cameroon and Slovenia, as well as beef from Portugal.
