AMMAN — Enhancing Jordanian-Turkish economic and trade ties is in the best interest of the Kingdom’s economy, President of the Amman Chamber of Commerce Khalil Hajj Tawfiq said on Wednesday during a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Amman Ismail Aramaz.

Hajj Tawfiq voiced the chamber’s support for the reintroduction of the free trade agreement between the two sides within new terms and conditions, noting that the cancellation of the agreement is “against the interests of Amman and Istanbul”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Kingdom’s imports from Turkey increased by 14 per cent in 2019 to reach $882 million, in comparison with $442 million in 2018, while exports to Turkey dropped by 43 per cent in 2019 to $46 million, compared with $81 million in 2018, Hajj Tawfiq said.

The Turkish envoy called for increasing investments between the two sides, in addition to enhancing cooperation in the tourism sector and intensifying visits by trade delegations when the coronavirus crisis ends.
