Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will commission new solar power capacity totalling 600 megawatts (MW) at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in the third quarter.

CEO and MD Mohammed Al Tayer said during a virtual press conference on Tuesday that the utility will commission the 300 MW first stage of Phase 5 in July, and Phase 4’s 100 MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) tower, the world's tallest, and a 200 MW parabolic trough unit in September.

When complete, Phase 5 will generate 900 MW of electricity using photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, while Phase 4 will generate 950MW with 600MW from a parabolic basin complex, 100MW from a solar tower, and 250MW from PV panels, according to past DEWA statements.

Al Tayer said DEWA will launch its own satellite in conjunction with Expo 2020 Dubai to use space technologies to monitor the performance and efficiency of the PV solar panels at the solar park and study the impact of weather and climate change on energy infrastructure and supply.

He added that the utility’s Green Hydrogen project, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar energy, will start operations on Wednesday.
