Sharjah: Forky, a fictional character from Toy Story 4 sprung to life in the hands of a group of young children as they whipped him out of a white plastic spoon, some lumps of coloured clay, a flexible pipe cleaner and a pair of googly eyes at an interactive workshop session held at the ‘Kids Station’ targeting children 7 years and above at the ongoing Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF), which concludes on Friday, October 18, at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC).

The little ones participating in the workshop were familiar with the animated toy, and just as ‘Bonnie’ fashions a plain spork in the movie transforming it into a lovable character, so too did the kids as they worked with the materials on their table to create their own unique adaptation of the toy at the crafts session conducted by Maitha Aljuwaied.

Following instructions, the kids wound a dark red pipe cleaner around the spoon to create his arms, fashioned the balls of clay into a thick unibrow and smiling lips before placing his mismatched googly eyes in position. It was a fun-filled session mingled with plenty of cheering, shouting and clapping. At the conclusion of the workshop, it was a large group of smiling faces that exited the room, each proudly holding a Forky in their tiny hands.

‘Every play begins with an idea’

Theatre professional Adnan Salloum initiated young participants at SIFF 2019 into the creative world of drama through another interactive workshop on Tuesday evening to stimulate their interest in performing through play.

“Every play begins with an idea,” said Salloum. “This is what triggers the whole process of developing a story outline, creating and fleshing out characters, crafting the script and describing the scenes, creating the dialogue, and setting the mood and tone of the characters and the play as a whole.”

Great drama comes when an actor fully understands his/her character, he added. “Characterisation of the characters is therefore critical to improving the story.”

Drama boosts the creative imagination, improves critical thinking skills, develops out-of-the-box thinking and imbues a child with extreme self-confidence, he concluded, while urging participants at the workshop to let go of their inhibitions and participate in theatre productions in their respective schools.

SIFF 2019 is organised by FUNN – Sharjah Media Arts for Youth & Children. This edition is home to over 40 workshops across a variety of creative and media arts fields, and divided into the children (7 years and above) and youth (17 years and above) to cater to their specific learning requirements.
