There has been a surge in the number of visas issued to Bahrainis by the Japanese Embassy.

Bahrainis travelled to Japan for honeymoon or during the popular cherry blossom season, according to Japanese Ambassador Hideki Ito.

“The number of total visas issued by the embassy annually increased from 459 to 1,228 between 2009 and 2019,” he said.

“The number of visas issued to Bahrainis for tourism purposes increased from 57 to 397.”

Currently, the number of applications have decreased due to Covid-19.

Mr Ito said many Bahrainis were keen to study or travel to the East Asian powerhouse.

He also hoped that two Bahraini students who could not start the personnel exchange programme funded by Japan last year due to Covid-19 can soon begin their studies at their respective Japanese universities.
