6,000 vaccine trial target reached in Bahrain

Manama: The Crown Prince yesterday thank- ed his 6,000 fellow volunteers as Bahrain reached the target for the third phase of Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, said the continued determination and unity of the kingdom’s citizens and residents in supporting national efforts to combat the coronavirus remains central to overcoming challenges presented by the pandemic.

He said the contribution of his fellow volunteers from Bahrain in reaching their volunteering target, was both noble and charitable, showing great humanity and compassion.

A total of 6,000 people hailing from different nationalities have volunteered for the vaccine clinical trials.

The Health Ministry yesterday announced the target has been reached, six weeks after the trials got underway in Bahrain.

The Crown Prince said the scale of volunteering by citizens and residents is a source of great pride, and will remain etched in Bahrain’s history marking a humanitarian achievement on behalf of the kingdom and its people for the world.

He expressed gratitude to frontline healthcare workers, who have worked relentlessly day and night at various locations, and to Team Bahrain, who have helped support national efforts to ensure the health of the community is safeguarded.

He said the kingdom’s participation in the clinical trials has further strengthened its global humanitarian contribution, wishing the organisers of the trials every success in the next phases.

He praised the efforts of all who have supported the different phases, including the clinical trials taking place in Bahrain, China and the UAE.

Bilateral co-operation between Bahrain and the UAE in the phase three trials will contribute to producing a safe vaccine to benefit all, the Crown Prince added.

Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh said the efforts of Team Bahrain, led by the Crown Prince, represent a major catalyst to strenuous and dedicated work to protect people’s health and safety.

She thanked all volunteers from various communities for their initiative to develop a safe and effective vaccine.

“Bahrain’s success in completing the third phase of clinical trials of the inactivated vaccine for the coronavirus, by reaching the required number of 6,000 volunteers in six weeks, is a source of pride,” she said.

She praised the medical teams in charge of conducting the trials, who expressed their desire to conduct an additional 1,700 trials.

“The vaccine is safe and the associated symptoms, if any, are among the recognised ones,” she said, adding that clinical trials are part of a series of national initiatives to enhance health of the population, promote medical research and develop capabilities.
