Dubai has decided to shut all food and beverage outlets across the emirate for a period of two weeks, as part of precautionary measures to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The decision is the latest in a series of measures the authorities have implemented to flatten the curve of infections, which have been growing exponentially on a daily basis.

In a statement, the Dubai Municipality said the closure will start today, Monday, and includes all restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, coffee shops and foodservice establishments.

The decision was announced shortly after the UAE government said it would be closing all the malls across the country, except supermarkets and pharmacies, and suspend all inbound, outbound and transit flights, as residents are urged to stay indoors or observe social distancing when they’re out in public.

Schools nationwide, as well as public venues, beaches and bars had already been ordered closed.

The UAE has recently reported 13 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 153. Across the globe, the pandemic has infected more than 300,000 people, with the death toll climbing to 13,000.

The UAE has just approved an additional 16 billion UAE dirhams stimulus package, raising the total to 126 billion UAE dirhams in the UAE, in a bid to mitigate the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis, which has forced businesses to close shop and leave many people jobless.
