Abu Dhabi: Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi’s creative hub for regional artists, has announced its program for the month of March, which features a range of workshops, courses, a new exhibition opening and film screenings for the Abu Dhabi community and the wider UAE.

Warehouse421 is proud to welcome the Residents of Art Dubai 2019 through the month of March, including Verónica Vázquez [Uruguay], José Manuel Mesías [Cuba], Flora Rebollo [Brazil] and Jerry B. Martin [Colombia]. Their participation sees them immerse themselves in the local UAE art scene, in order to create a body of work that merges their artistic practice with their surroundings. On 1 – 3 March, Colombian artist Jerry B. Martin will lead a conceptual workshop dedicated to the collaboration of a production of a multidisciplinary artwork that explores the boundaries between language, cinema and the self.

Beginning 3 March will be Warehouse421’s next instalment on designing and making brass and silver jewellery, in which participants will use easy techniques to design classic wire-wrap jewellery pieces, including earrings, ring and pedants. This course, which is an ever popular one, is designed for those new to the art of jewellery design. In addition, Warehouse421 will be offering a short course on the theory and practice behind decoding documentary films, led by director and screenwriter, Yazan Al Ghazzawi, on 13 and 20 March.

Two-day workshops are also being offered for Abu Dhabi’s flourishing community of aspiring photographers looking to expand their skills and go from shooting in auto to semi-manual modes, or for confident photographers looking to step up from semi-manual to full manual modes. These workshops, led by the photographer Wilbur Smith, are being held on the weekend of 8 – 9 March in partnership with Gulf Photo Plus.

The highlight of the month at Warehouse421 will be the all-new exhibition, Nomadic Traces: Journey of Arabian Scripts, which is set to open on 16 March. The exhibition will explore the origins of six of the most influential alphabets in the history of the Middle East, alongside featuring newly commissioned works by artists and designers from across the region. The exhibition displays insights into the dissemination and development of writing systems were driven by economic trade and cultural exchange, which led to the alphabets and languages used by millions today.

Warehouse421 will also hold a workshop titled Talismanic Textiles, on 26 March, which will bring plain textiles to life with colourful patterns, as participants use original artwork as inspiration for printing patterns onto plain textile surfaces.

The ‘Herstory: Film & the Arab Woman’ film series continues this month, which features contemporary films by or about Arab women. This month sees the screening of Cactus Flower, on 27 March, which focuses on two women embarking on a journey to find shelter in Cairo with Yassin, a twenty-year old street savvy youth. Their journey, at times disastrous and at times banal, sees them travel along parallel paths of self-discovery. On the same night, the short documentary MAMSOUS, directed by Shatha Masoud, will be shown. The documentary focuses on three people who share their experiences with clinical depression and panic attacks. These screenings, held in partnership with Cinema Akil, are free to attend.

Finally, Warehouse421 will be hosting on 30 March another book reading session of its ‘Khayal’ series, in collaboration with Early Starters, which brings children’s books to life in imaginative ways. This month, we’re marking Abu Dhabi’s “Month of Reading”, which is a combination of engaging readings, crafts, interactive games and more. We’re looking forward to welcoming the young people of the city to celebrate some of our favourite children’s books!
