Shell Egypt has announced that it has signed an exclusive, two-year deal with Revolta Egypt which will see 100 vehicle charging points introduced into Shell-branded retailers and distributors in Egypt.

The deal, which was signed by the general manager of Shell Lubricants Egypt, Saher Hashem, and by Revolta Egypt CEO Mohamed Badawi, will help Revolta Egypt to “become a key player in Egypt's energy transition process”, Badawi said at the ceremony. “This will only be through collaborations with success partners such as Shell, who aspire to achieve the same goals.”

Badawi said that Revolta Egypt aims to reach 345 stations by 2020, by covering nearly 90 percent of cities and roads in all provinces to serve 10,000 electric vehicles per day, including more than 100 stations that will be implemented in partnership with Shell”.

He said the company had already installed 130 charging points, “of which 7-8 points are located at Shell outlets”.

Speaking at the event, Eng Khaled Kacem, chairman and managing director of Shell Egypt, told Zawya that on a global level, Shell was expanding its renewable energy activities “to work on reducing carbon emissions by less than 50 percent by 2050".

He added that Shell's New Energies business is investing around $2 billion annually on new clean energy sources. The firm is also working with electricity providers and car manufacturers to boost infrastructure for electric vehicles.

According to a report from S&P Global published in February, global sales of electric vehicles increased by 63 percent in 2018 to 2 million.
